President's Bio
Larry Wieda has been with the Boulder
[Colorado] Police Department for 28 years before retiring and previously served three years
with the New York City Police Department. He has served in many
capacities in both agencies, such as: SWAT, Anti-Crime Unit, Special Crime
Task Forces, Patrol, Crime Prevention Community Service Officer, Crime
Stoppers Coordinator and Special Assignment to the Governor's Office. He
has attended Farmingdale University and John Jay College of Criminal Justice
in New York.
He was elected and served three terms as
President of the Colorado Crime Prevention Association. Founder of the
Colorado State Crime Stoppers program and was elected and served as its
President for five years. In 1993, he was elected for a two-year term as
President of Crime Stoppers International, Inc. and was reelected for a second
term in 1995. He has served on the National Ad Council as an Advisor to
the National Crime Prevention McGruff Campaign. He has and continues to
serve on the National Crime Prevention Council and Coalition.
He has received numerous awards and
recognition locally, nationally, and internationally. The awards were
for his involvement in both Crime Prevention and Crime Stoppers programs, such
as: The Greg Mac Aleese Founders Award; Crime Stoppers Coordinator of the Year
Award; The George B. Sunderland Crime Prevention Practitioner of the Year
Award; and the Award of Excellence from his community, just to name a few.
He has been responsible for the development
and implementation of two internationally award winning and well-recognized
programs. The first is the Best Buddy Bear Program. The
program was designed to assist law enforcement in the investigation of sexual
assault and abuse of children. This process was so successful, that the
program expanded to any traumatized child or adult that was a victim of an
accident or crime. Several thousands of Teddy Bears have been donated
and distributed worldwide. It was developed by Mr. Wieda and implemented
in schools around the world. The second recognized program is the
Scholastic Crime Stoppers Program. It was designed so students could
have their own Crime Stoppers Program in their school. The program helps
reduce crime, victimization, and now school violence. As the program's
Founder, he has traveled to many countries around the world to assist in
setting up and implementing Scholastic Crime Stoppers as well as Crime
Stoppers Programs.
